SLOTTED BOTTOM BOARD
Placed between the base and the first brood box the board becomes a permanent part of the hive.
The design of the board provides the following advantages to the beekeeper:
- The longer entrance enables the guard bees to better defend the hive entrance against intruders
- The slats distribute air flow through the hive more evenly and this often overcomes the reluctancesome queens display in laying eggs nearer to the hive entrance
- During winter the bees are able to restrict cold air into the hive by blocking the gap between the slats with their bodies
- After winter the colony is stronger and is able to work on the spring honey flow with a larger number of foragers.
Three evenly spaced drainage holes should be drilled across the wide board entrance to prevent any water logging.
